(10) Points About Mold Remediaton in NYS

  1. Mold Remediation Contractors must be licensed by the NYS Labor Dept.
  2.  All Mold Remediaton Workers must be individually licensed by the NYS Labor Dept. as well.
  3.  All licensed Mold Remediation Contractors and Workers in NYS are required to renew their respective licenses and take approved training every (2) years.
  4. Mold Remediation Contractors cannot perform mold remediation on any project larger than 10 square feet of involved area without first having a Mold Remediaton Plan developed specific to that property and mold abatement project.
  5. The Mold Remediation Plan is provided by a NYS Labor Dept. Licensed Mold Assessor who is independent and separate from the Mold Remediation Contractor.  See (10) Points about Mold Assessment in NYS for additional details.
  6. Mold Remediation Contractors in NYS cannot provide clearance on any abatement/remediation project.  Clearances and documentation must be provided by the professional Mold Assessor.
  7. Professional Mold Remediation is more involved than simply spraying a chemical on impacted areas and is designed to identify moisture sources and the causes of the mold so that measures can be taken to prevent mold from regrowing.
  8. Most mold remediation contractors do not also provide remodeling services that will rebuild areas where building materials had to be removed as part of the mold remediation project.  A separate remodeling contractor may be needed.
  9. As the home and/or property owner, you do not need to hire mold professionals to perform mold remediation.
  10. There are no established safe levels for indoor mold other than there should be no visible mold and no odor of mold.  Actual mold testing is not required by NYS but may be helpful in establishing the scope of a particular cleanup and to establish measurable cleanup objectives.
