(10) Points About Mold Assessments in NYS

1. A Mold Assessor is a professional licensed by the NYS Labor Dept. to determine if mold is present and if a mold remediation plan is needed – typically if more than 10 square feet is involved.  A Mold Remediation Contractor cannot start a mold remediation project or even provide estimated costs without the remediation plan developed by the Mold Assessor.

2. The Mold Assessor performs any mold testing that is deemed necessary although mold testing is not required in order to make a determination that mold exists and that remediation is needed.

3. The Mold Assessor develops the mold remediation plan that a professional Mold Remediation Contractor must follow.

4. The NYS Licensed Mold Assessor provides any needed inspections, testing, and documentation after the Mold Remediation Contractor is finished.

4. The NYS Licensed Mold Assessor is required to determine the cause of the mold and to make recommendations for corrective actions in order to prevent further mold from growing.

5. A Mold Remediation Plan, also referred to as a Mold Assessment,  takes into account a number of factors and variables that may be unique to that specific mold project.

6. The Mold Assessment determines and specifies the area of involvement, containment, type and location of containment necessary for proper remediation of this specific project.

7. The Mold Assessment determines the types of ventilation (negative and/or HEPA), ventilation rates and dehumidification that are needed for the specific remediation project.

8. The Mold Assessment specifies the process(es) to be used by the Mold Remediation Contractor.

9. The Mold Remediation Plan/Mold Assessment specifies the personal protection equipment needed by all Mold Remediation Workers within the containment area of that specific project.

10.  The NYS Licensed Mold Assessor is independent and totally separate from any Mold Remediation Contractor and is not allowed to also perform mold remediation services on that particular mold remediation project.
